When you think of the beloved stranger things cast, names like Millie Bobby Brown, Winona Ryder and, well, Joe Keery’s hair certainly come to mind.
Yes, the voluminous hair of this last of the three has kind of become a character in itself since it made its screen debut in 2016, when the first season dropped. Over the years, his iconic mane has continued to evolve – it’s something the wearer of said mane does not take lightly.
“It owns me at this point,” said Joe Keery SHE Australia on a Zoom catch-up ahead of the release of season four.
He laughs, as do three of his castmates seated around him – obviously we’re not the first to push the actor on the ins and outs of this gravity-defying asset he possesses.
“It hires me as a body and I can just walk it from place to place, especially on set,” he continues.
“I just make sure it’s well lit and washed, you know, and now it’s out of my head and there it is.”
Some publications went so far as to interview hairdressers who had worked with him for the truth. Others simply took her picture to their hairdresser hoping to walk away with a similar mop.
But despite everything anyone tries, it’s become pretty clear that no hair will ever be quite like Keery’s, not least because in a kind of twist of sorcery, he does very little about it.
To add fuel to the searing revelation, Keery said he was even offered “a bunch of money” to work with a major haircare brand, but he pulled it off.
“I think that would be so lame for the majority of people. It would be a sellout. Don’t you think?” he said at the time.
If there’s one thing Keery is, it’s honest.
We speak to her alongside her teammate, Maya Hawke, and it’s clear there’s a strong bond between the two. Hawke joined the cast in season three as the loveable Robin Buckley, who shares a close friendship with Steve de Keery.
“Everyone was so warm and welcoming, and having Joe as a stage partner was like, the best and most fun the first time we did a chemistry reading,” she tells us on the Zoom call. while Keery gives a small thumbs up.
In season 4, which begins in the spring of 1986, Robin and Steve’s friendship continues to evolve as they click, clash and bond over the complexity of their love life – Robin has a huge crush on another Hawkins High band member Vickie while Steve is on a mission to find the perfect girl after his breakup with Nancy.
There is no doubt that the coming season will be fuller of mystery than ever…stranger things Just gets it, in that regard — but there’s also no denying that the actors behind Hawkins are as down-to-earth as ever — even as Keery’s hair continues to reach stratospheric new heights.
