Kyrie Irving of Brooklyn dribbles during a game against the Charlotte Hornets at Barclays Center on April 16, 2021 in the Brooklyn neighborhood of New York City.

It’s been a revolving door for the Nets superstars all season. Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving all faced a combination of injuries and off-court issues that kept them from spending much time together on the pitch.

The Brooklyn Big Three have only played seven games together since the team acquired Harden in a four-team trade in mid-January.

This week, with Durant (thigh) and Harden (hamstrings) sidelined with injury, Irving was in the spotlight. And after leading the Nets to a 134-129 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday, Irving was featured on the TNT aired with a post-game interview, in which he was asked a revealing question.

How Kyrie honors Dr. J

Irving’s interview on TNT on Tuesday ended with an unrelated question to basketball: What made the 29-year-old grow?

A laugh escaped from Irving.

“I’m not the only Irving to have had the shot,” he said, referring to NBA legend and former Netflix player Julius Erving. “Shout out to my man, Dr. J, for that, man.” But honestly, I’ve had my life my whole life, you see it on the big stage a little while ago.

Kyrie has always had a deep admiration for Dr. J. Last season, Irving’s first with the Nets, he referred to Erving – and the two ABA titles that Dr. J won with the New York Nets from the time in 1974 and 1976 – discussing Brooklyn. hope to win a title.

“It’s no coincidence that the last time the Nets won a title, they were led by Julius Erving. Irving said in January 2020, via an NBA reporter Michael lee. “And now we have another Irving. I say it like that. “

For his part, Dr. J also held Irving in high regard.

“When I watch him play I see he’s a guy who has no limits, he’s extremely confident and he’s talented beyond belief,” the Hall of Famer told cleveland.com in 2017. “When he has these one-on-one situations and he drops low and he handles the ball, there’s no one on the planet who can stay ahead of him.

Kyrie focused on net health

Some nights the beaten Nets are able to pull through – like Tuesday, when, despite being understaffed, the Irving-led Nets found a way to win. Irving lost 32 points in the five-point win over the Pelicans.

Then there are other nights when injuries pile up and Brooklyn is outmatched – like Wednesday when the Toronto Raptors won 114-103, taking advantage of a Nets team playing without two superstars.

“We’re doing our best,” Irving said via TNT. “We just want to come here, play with a lot of energy and be there for each other. We had nine active living bodies (Tuesday vs. Pelicans). So we were doing our best. It could go both ways. … It could go very well or very badly. So tonight (Tuesday), I’m glad we fought.

When the Nets are finally healthy, where does Kyrie want the Nets to improve?

“We just need to raise our level of focus and pay attention to the little details,” he said. “Obviously we have the talent, we are able to move on the field, we are able to do good things, but it will come down to possession by possession and who is going to benefit from it. … So we just have to stay focused. And I want us to raise our (game) even more, but first we need everyone to be healthy. “
